TEACHER ELIGIBILITY
Teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held. Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA audition.Members paying dues by the July 1 deadline are eligible to enter students. A teacher paying dues after July 1 (but before the audition deadline) may enter students in OMTA auditions by paying a $25 fine for the year. The fine should accompany the first audition entry form.
New OMTA/MTNA teachers must pay state and national dues by the entry postmark deadline of the audition.
Student members may enter students in District and State Achievement Auditions at the discretion of their major or pedagogy professor.
AUDITION CENTERS
For Junior and Senior Auditions teachers will enter students in the audition center based on the location of the teacher's studio. Students must enter the nearest audition center within the correct district. Entries will not be accepted by any other audition chair.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
Pre-college entrants must have studied in the performance medium of the audition with the same member teacher a minimum of 6 calendar months of the 9 calendar months immediately preceding the first day of the month in which the audition is held. An exception to this is allowed only if the student and/or teacher move out of the area, or if the regular teacher is incapacitated or takes a sabbatical leave. Under such exceptional circumstances, a letter from the original teacher explaining and approving the change in teachers must accompany the entry form. The granting of an exception is not intended to cover situations where the student or parents initiate the change in teachers.
REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC
Taping of an audition or competition violates copyright laws and is not allowed. ILLEGAL reproduction of music (by hand or machine) including transpositions, cannot be used by performers or accompanists nor provided for judges. The only exception to this rule is for music which is out of print or still in manuscript (not published). In either case, the student must, at each level of competition, present written permission from the publisher or copyright holder to copy the music. This rule is a MTNA rule made in the interest of professional ethics. Reproductions of single pages may be used to facilitate page turns for accompanists, but the published score must also be on the music stand and/or music rack. For further details see: www.menc.org/information/copyright.html
EXAMINATION OF MUSIC
Immediately prior to each entrant's audition, a monitor will examine all music. Reproduced pages to facilitate page turns must be paper clipped to the original page in the score. Any other reproduced music without a letter of permission from the copyright holder will be removed. Each contestant must have a copy of each composition for the judge. Any identifying names must be removed before submitting music for examination. Students without a copy of the music for the judge will be permitted to perform for critique only and will not be considered as a winner, alternate, honorable mention, or receive a rating.
JUDGES
Decision of the judge(s) is final. Judges have the prerogative not to declare a winner or alternate or honorable mention.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY
Teachers may accompany their own students in OMTA/MTNA auditions. However, they should remain as impersonal as possible with the students during the audition. The parent should not have contact with the judge during the audition. It is the responsibility of each OMTA member to abide by the general rules that apply to all auditions as well as the specific rules for each audition. The teacher is responsible for informing students and parents of their responsibility in abiding by the printed audition rules. ENTRY DEADLINE
Entries postmarked after the postmark deadline will not be accepted. Only exact reproductions of the entry form as printed in the Audition Guidelines book for each audition will be accepted. No entries via telephone. Entry fees are non-refundable. Entries received on incomplete entry forms or entries received without the correct entry fee will not be accepted. The fee for returned checks is $10.00. An entrant will not be permitted to perform in the audition until the entry fee and returned check charge has been paid by cash or money order. |
