2011 OMTA COLLEGIATE COMPETITION RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

TEACHER ELIGIBILITY

  1. OMTA teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held.
  2. OMTA teachers whose full or provisional certification has expired, and recertification has not been completed by the entry deadline of the competition must pay a $200.00 (payable to OMTA) participation fee. The fee must accompany the entry form.
  3. OMTA/MTNA certification expiration date is required on each entry form
  4. An email address for the teacher is required on each entry form.
  5. OMTA teachers paying dues by June 30 are eligible to enter students.
  6. Teachers paying dues after June 30, but before the entry deadline, may enter students by paying $25.00 (payable to OMTA) late fee for the year.
  7. A first time OMTA/MTNA teacher must pay state and national dues by the entry deadline of the Junior Competition.
  8. Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA Competition.

TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY

  1. It is the responsibility of each OMTA teacher to abide by the printed rules of the competition
  2. Failure to abide by the printed rules will result in the disqualification of the entrant.
  3. The teacher may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the competition.
  4. The teacher must inform students and parents of their obligation to abide by the printed rules of the competition.
    • a. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the audition.
      b. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions or any OMTA Board Member.
      c. Audio and video taping violates copy-right laws and is not permitted.

ENTRANT CATEGORIES
Entrants may enter in solo performance areas to include piano, organ, voice, and orchestral instruments.

Category A: Freshman and sophomore students in college who have not reached age 27 at the time of the audition or students in the first and second year after high school.

Category B: Junior and senior students in college who have not reached age 27 at the time of the audition or students in the third and fourth year after high school.

Category C: Graduate students in college who have not reached age 27 at the time of the audition or students out of high school five or more years who have not reached age 27 at the time of the audition.

Category D: Students in this category perform for critique only. All students who are high school graduates and have not reached age 27 at the time of the audition are included in this category.

Category E: Students in this category perform for critique only. All students who are high school graduates beyond the age of 27 are included in this category.

REPERTOIRE REQUIRMENTS

Piano:
Two or more compositions chosen from contrasting period. One must be Baroque or Classical. Repertoire must be memorized.

Voice:

  1. An aria from a standard opera or oratoria.
  2. Two art songs (French, Italian, or German) each in a different language.
  3. One contemporary English or American song.
  4. Once the above 3 requirements are met, the student may complete the time requirement with other suitable repertoire.
  5. Repertoire must be memorized.

Additional requirements for Piano, Voice, and Instrumental entrants

  1. The performer will be allowed a brief warm-up (one-minute maximum) in the competition room before performing for the adjudicator.
  2. The student may choose the first piece to perform. The Adjudicator will select the order of the remaining repertoire.
  3. In the interest of time, an entrant may be stopped during a piece. The performer will not be disqualified in the performance exceeds the maximum time allowed. Only the maximum time allowed will be adjudicated.
  4. A student may not enter repertoire performed on a previous OMTA Conference program.
  5. Repertoire cannot be changed after one (1) week past the entry deadline.

REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC

  1. Reproduction of music, including transpositions by hand or machine may not be used by accompanists and may not be provided for the adjudicator(s).
  2. The only exception to this rule is for music which is out of print or still in manuscript (not published). Then the teacher must:
    • a. Provide the student with a letter of permission from the publisher or copyright holder to copy the music.
      b. The letter of permission must be presented at the competition.
  3. Reproduction of single pages may be used by the accompanist to facilitate page turns. The published score must be on the music rack.
  4. Computer generated music scores must have proof of purchase.
  5. Repertoire written with accompaniment must be performed with a professional accompanist. The teacher may accompany their students.
  6. Computer generated tapes and CD accompaniments are not permitted.

EXAMINATION OF MUSIC

  1. A monitor may examine all music prior to the performance of each entrant and the entrant's accompanist.
  2. Reproduction music without a letter of permission from the publisher and/or copyright holder will be removed and may not be used by the accompanist, or provided for the adjudicator(s). The entrant will not be permitted to perform the music in violation of this rule.
  3. Reproduced pages to facilitate page turns must be clipped to the original page in the score.
  4. Entrants must provide an original score for the adjudicator(s). Entrants without an original score from the adjudicator will be permitted, provided all other competition requirements have been met, to perform for critique only and will not be considered as a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
  5. Identifying names must be removed from the music.
  6. Measure numbers not printed in the music must appear in each measure or at the beginning of each line.

AUDITION WINNERS

  1. In categories A, B, and C a student may only be a winner one time in each category in the same performance medium.
  2. Winners will appear in recital during the OMTA State Conference June 1-2, 2012 at Oklahoma City University.
  3. Appropriate concert attire is preferred for the Winners' Recital.
  4. A monetary award will be presented to each winner at the State Conference.
  5. In the event there is only one entry in a specific category, the entrant must perform for a critique in order to qualify for the monetary award.
  6. OMTA must have a current mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number from each winner for correspondence pertaining to the State Conference.

COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS

  1. The competition performance is open to the public
  2. All competition participants will receive a Certificate of Merit. The certificate, critique sheet and music must be picked up by the student, the teacher, or another designated person. The materials cannot be mailed at a later date.

ADJUDICATORS

The decision of the adjudicator(s) is final. The quality of the performance will determine the selection of the winner rather than the length or difficulty of the composition. The adjudicator(s) have prerogative not to declare a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
