2012 OMTA DISTRICT ACHIEVEMENT ADUTION
The purpose of the Achievement Audition is to provide a noncompetitive event to recognize and encourage individual achievement without comparison to, or contrast with, other students of similar age and length of study.
TEACHER ELIGIBILITY
- OMTA teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held.
- OMTA teachers whose full or provisional certification has expired, and recertification has not been completed by the entry deadline of the competition must pay a $200.00 (payable to OMTA) participation fee. The fee must accompany the entry form.
- OMTA/MTNA certification expiration date is required on each entry form
- An email address for the teacher is required on each entry form.
- OMTA teachers paying dues by June 30 are eligible to enter students.
- Teachers paying dues after June 30, but before the entry deadline, may enter students by paying $25.00 (payable to OMTA) late fee for the year.
- A first time OMTA/MTNA teacher must pay state and national dues by the entry deadline of the Junior Competition.
- Student OMTA members may enter students in the District Achievement Audition at the discretion of their major or pedagogy professor.
- Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA Competition.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY
- It is the responsibility of each OMTA teacher to abide by the printed rules of the competition
- Should the teacher submit repertoire in violation of the requirements and it is discovered prior to the audition; the audition chair will contact the teacher and give the opportunity to change the piece.
- Should a student be unable to change repertoire, he/she will be allowed to participate without penalty, performing the piece in violation of the requirements.
- The audition chair will notify the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions of the teacher's error.
- If the repertoire error is not discovered until the audition, the student will be allowed to perform without penalty. The chair will be notified after the performance of the error
- Immediately following the audition, the chair will contact the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions.
- After the violation in repertoire is reported, the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions will notify the teacher of the following disciplinary action:
a. The teacher will be placed under advisement for a period of two years.
b. The teacher will be required to submit music for approval to another teacher designated by the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions.
c. The music must be submitted for approval no later than two weeks prior to the postmark deadline of the event.
- The teacher may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the competition.
- The teacher must inform students and parents of their obligation to abide by the printed rules of the competition.
a. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the audition.
b. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions or any OMTA Board Member.
c. Audio and video taping violates copy-right laws and is not permitted.
AUDITION CENTERS
- Teachers must enter students in the competition center nearest the teacher's studio within the district. Entries will not be accepted by any other competition chair
- In extenuating circumstances, a teacher may contact another audition chair by email with a co-copy to the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions to request a transfer for the student, provided the request is submitted before the postmark deadline. It will remain the decision of the audition chair to accept the transfer
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
- Solo Division
b. Orchestral instruments: K-12
- Merit Division
b. Orchestral instruments: 3-12
- Students must have studied with the same teacher a minimum of 6 months of the 9 months proceeding the first day of the month of the competition. An exception will be permitted if:
a. The student and/or teacher move out of the area.
b. The teacher takes a sabbatical leave.
c. The teacher is incapacitated.
d. The previous teacher was not an OMTA member.
- Under exceptional circumstances and 4 weeks prior to the entry deadline, a letter from the previous OMTA teacher explaining and approving the change in teachers must be sent to the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions. The decision will be sent by e-mail to the current teacher to attach to the entry from.
- The granting of an exception will not be permitted if the parent and/or student initiate the change in teachers.
- Student studying in a multi-teacher school or studio must be entered under the name of the primary teacher.
ENTERY FEES AND ENTRY DEADLINE
- The entry fee for performance and theory at the District Achievement Audition is $15.00.
- The entry fee for theory only is $15.00.
- The entry fee for the State Achievement Audition is $15.00 and is payable at the District Audition.
- Only exact reproductions of the District Achievement Entry Form printed in the 2011-2012 Membership Handbook will be accepted
- The teacher must send all entry forms, legibly and completely filled out, along with one check payable to OMTA to the audition chair by the postmark deadline
- Entry fees are non-refundable.
- Entries postmarked after the postmark deadline will not be accepted.
- Entries received on incomplete entry forms and/or entries received without the correct entry fee will not be accepted.
- The fee for a check returned marked insufficient funds is $15.00. An entrant will not be permitted to perform in the competition until the entry fee and the returned check charge fee is paid by money order to the OMTA State Treasurer.
- Entries will not be accepted by telephone or e-mail.
PERFORMANCE TIME
- The entrant will be allowed a brief warm-up (one minute maximum) in the audition room before performing for the adjudicator.
- Maximum performance time is 7 minutes.
PERFOMANCE CATEGORIES SOLO DIVISION
- Student performs on memorized solo for a rating.
- Students receiving a I+, I, or I- advance to the State Achievement Audition performing the same solo performed at the District Achievement Audition.
- One week after the District Achievement entry deadline no change in repertoire will be accepted.
PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES MERIT DIVISION
- A teacher may enter a student to perform tow memorized solos of equal difficulty.
- The solo listed first on the entry form will be performed at the District Audition.
- The solo listed second on the entry form will be performed at the State Audition provided the student receives a rating of I+ or I at the District Audition and take the Theory test at the District Audition.
- The student will advance to the Merit Division in the State Achievement Audition and will perform the second piece listed on the entry form.
- A Student meeting all requirements for the Merit division at the District Level must remain in the Merit Division at the State Achievement Audition.
- A merit Division entrant receiving a I- rating at District will advance to State Achievement but will perform the district piece in the Solo Division
- Merit division entrants may not change repertoire between District and State.
PIANO REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
- Only solo (no concerto) repertoire accepted.
- Only original piano repertoire accepted.
- Transcriptions of major works must have prior approval from the Vice President for Competitions and Auditions if not listed in The Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature by Jane Magrath.
- The following repertoire WILL NOT be accepted:
a. Simplified arrangements of original solo repertoire.
b. Arrangements, transcriptions and/or adaptations of original solo repertoire.
c. Popular music, hymns, folk songs, orchestral reductions, concertos written for any instruments, and vocal arrangements.
d. Pre-reading (off-staff) music.

REPERTOIRE REQUIRMENTS VOICE & INSTRUMENTAL
- Repertoire written with accompaniment must be performed with a professional accompanist. The teacher may accompany their students.
- Computer generated tapes and CD accompaniments are not permitted.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE TO ALL CATEGORIES
- Multi-movements from a multi-movement work will be accepted as on composition.
- A group of pieces taken from a collection by the same composer is not considered a multi-movement work and only one piece will be accepted on the entry form.
- All variations must be performed in a theme and variation work.
- Compositions may not be cut or altered except for dot repeats. First endings may be cut following a D.S. or D.C. repeat.
- The following will be considered by the adjudicators when awarding a rating.
a. variety in rhythm, articulations, and dynamics.
b. Preferably 16 measures in length.
- Repertoire changes will not be accepted after one (1) week past the entry deadline.
REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC
- Reproduction of music, including transpositions by hand or machine may not be used by accompanists and may not be provided for the adjudicator(s).
- The only exception to this rule is for music which is out of print or still in manuscript (not published). Then the teacher must:
a. Provide the student with a letter of permission from the publisher or copyright holder to copy the music.
b. The letter of permission must be presented at the competition.
- Reproduction of single pages may be used by the accompanist to facilitate page turns. The published score must be on the music rack.
- Computer generated music scores must have proof of purchase.
EXAMINATION OF MUSIC
- A monitor may examine all music prior to the performance of each entrant and the entrant's accompanist.
- Reproduction music without a letter of permission from the publisher and/or copyright holder will be removed and may not be used by the accompanist, or provided for the adjudicator(s). The entrant will not be permitted to perform the music in violation of this rule.
- Reproduced pages to facilitate page turns must be clipped to the original page in the score.
- Entrants must provide an original score for the adjudicator(s). Entrants without an original score from the adjudicator will be permitted, provided all other competition requirements have been met, to perform for critique only and will not be considered as a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
- Identifying names must be removed from the music.
- Measure numbers not printed in the music must appear in each measure or at the beginning of each line.
AUDITION PARTICIPANTS
- The adjudicator must hear all of the memorized solo to award a rating
- The ratings for District Achievement are I+, I, I-, II, III, IV.
- Students receiving a I+, or I will receive a medal at District.
- Students receiving a I+, I or I- rating will advance to the State Achievement Audition. The State Achievement Audition entry fee is payable at the District Achievement Audition.
- All entrants who receive a rating will be awarded a Certificate of Merit.
- The certificate, critique sheet and music must be picked up by the student, the teacher, or another designated person. The materials cannot be mailed at a later date.
ADJUDICATORS
- The quality of the performance will be determine the rating, rather than the length or difficulty of the solo
- Should the adjudicator determine the repertoire does not satisfy the repertoire requirements he/she will:
a. Write a critique and award a rating without penalty to the entrant and without reference to the repertoire error.
b. will mark his/her audition schedule to identify the student.
c. Without interrupting the audition schedule, the adjudicator will discreetly notify the District Audition chair.
- The decision of the adjudicator is final and may not be questioned by the teacher, student and parent.
