2011 OMTA JUNIOR COMPETITION RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

The purpose of the Junior Competition is to give students the opportunity to perform in a competitive event that will allow those students who exhibit a sufficient level of performace skill to have the opportunity to perform on a Winners' Recital. It is the responsibility of the teacher to select repertoire suitable both to the needs of the student and for the presentation on a recital for teachers.

TEACHER ELIGIBILITY
  1. OMTA teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held.
  2. OMTA teachers whose full or provisional certification has expired, and recertification has not been completed by the entry deadline of the competition must pay a $200.00 (payable to OMTA) participation fee. The fee must accompany the entry form.
  3. OMTA/MTNA certification expiration date is required on each entry form
  4. An email address for the teacher is required on each entry form.
  5. OMTA teachers paying dues by June 30 are eligible to enter students.
  6. Teachers paying dues after June 30, but before the entry deadline, may enter studnets by paying $25.00 (payable to OMTA) late fee for the year.
  7. A first time OMTA/MTNA teacher must pay state and national dues by the entry deadline of the Junior Competition.
  8. Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA Competition.
TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY
  1. It is the responsibiltiy of each OMTA teacher to abide by the printed rules of the competition
  2. Failure to abide by the printed rules will result in the disqualification of the entrant.
  3. The teacher may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the competition.
  4. The teacher must inform students and parents of their obligation to abide by the printed rules of the competition.
    • a. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the audition.
      b. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions or any OMTA Board Member.
      c. Audio and video taping violates copy-right laws and is not permitted.
COMPETITION CENTERS

Teachers must enter students in the competition center nearest the teascher's studio within the district. Entries will not be accpeted by any other competition chair

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
  1. Students must be in school grades 3-8 at the time of the competition.
  2. Students may enter in piano and/or orchestral instruments.
  3. Students must have studied with the same teacher a minimum of 6 months of the 9 months preceding the first day of the month of the competition. An exception will be permitted if:
    • a. The student and/or teacher move out of the area.
      b. The teacher takes a sabbatical leave.
      c. The teacher is incapacitated.
      d. The previous teacher was not an OMTA member.
  4. Under exceptional circumstances and 4 weeks prior to the entry deadline, a letter from the pervious OMTA teacher explaining and approving the change in teachers must be sent to the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions. The decision will be sent by e-mail to the current teacher to attach to the entry from.
  5. The granting of an exception will not be permitted if the parent and/or student initiate the change in teachers.
  6. Student studying in a multi-teacher school or studio must be entered under the name of the primary teacher.
  7. A student may enter for critique only.
ENTERY FEES AND ENTRY DEADLINE
  1. The entryfee is $15.00 for each performace category entered. The teacher MUST send all entry forms legibly and completely filled out, along with ONE CHECK payable to OMTA to the competition.
  2. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  3. Entries postmarked after the postmark deadline will not be accepted.
  4. Only exact reproductions of the Competition Entry Form printed in the OMTA Membership Handbook will be accepted.
  5. Entries received on incomplete entry forms and/or entries received without the correct entry fee will not be accepted.
  6. The fee for a check returned marked insufficient funds is $15.00. An entrant will not be permitted to perform in the competition until the entry fee and the returned check charge fee is paid by money order to the OMTA State Treasurer.
  7. Entries will not be accepted by telephone or e-mail.
PERFORMANCE TIME
  1. The entrant is allowed a brief warm-up (on minute maximum) in the competition room before performing for the adjudicator.
  2. Maximum performace time is
    • a. Grades 3-4: 4 minutes
      b. Grades 5-6: 6 minutes
      c. Grades 7-8: 7 minutes
  3. A performance that exceeds the maximum performance time will not be considered as a winner or alternate. A student may enter the audition for critique only.
PIANO REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
  1. Only solo (no concerto) repertoire accepted.
  2. Only original piano repertoire accepted
  3. The following repertoire WILL NOT be accepted:
    • a. Simplified arrgements of original solo repertoire.
      b. Arrangements, transcriptions and/or adaptations of original solo repertoire.
      c. Popular music, hymns, folk songs, orchestral reductions, concertos written for any instruments, and vocal arrangements.
  4. See requirements applicable for both piano and instrumental repertoire.

INSTRUMENTAL REPERTOIRE REQUIRMENTS

  1. Repertoire written with accompaniment must be performed with a professional accompanist. The teacher may accompany their students.
  2. Computer generated tapes and CD accompaniments are not permitted.

PERFORMANCE WINNERS

The ratio of winners in each group will be determined by the District Co-President. An alternate will be selected for each winner if the quality of the performance warrants. Students selected as winners will perform on the District Conference program. Teachers entering students must advise students and parents of their responsibility if selected as a winner or alternate.

Winners or alternates who fail to perform on the District Conference program will not be permitted to enter the same performance medium in the Junior Audition the following year.

Winners will receive a certificate at the audition and a trophy following their performance on the Winners Recital at the District Conference.

ENTRY FEE $15.00


Entry fee is $15.00 for each performance area entered. The teacher should send all entry forms and one check made payable to OMTA to the audition chair by the postmark deadline. Entry fees are non-refundable.

JUDGES


The decision of the judge is final. The quality of the performance will determine the selection of the winner rather than the length or difficulty of the composition. A student may be selected for honorable mention if, in the opinion of the judge, such selection is warranted.

AUDITION PARTICIPANTS

The performances of the audition are open to the public. All audition participants will receive a Certificate of Merit. The critique sheet, music, and certificate are to be accepted by the student, the teacher or another designated person. The materials cannot be mailed at a later date.
