2011 OMTA MARILYN WITCHER JUNIOR HONOR COMPETITION RULES AND REQUIRMENTS

TEACHER ELIGIBILITY

  1. OMTA teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held.
  2. OMTA teachers whose full or provisional certification has expired, and recertification has not been completed by the entry deadline of the competition must pay a $200.00 (payable to OMTA) participation fee. The fee must accompany the entry form.
  3. OMTA/MTNA certification expiration date is required on each entry form
  4. An email address for the teacher is required on each entry form.
  5. OMTA teachers paying dues by June 30 are eligible to enter students.
  6. Teachers paying dues after June 30, but before the entry deadline, may enter students by paying $25.00 (payable to OMTA) late fee for the year.
  7. A first time OMTA/MTNA teacher must pay state and national dues by the entry deadline of the Junior Competition.
  8. Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA Competition.

TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY

  1. It is the responsibility of each OMTA teacher to abide by the printed rules of the competition
  2. Failure to abide by the printed rules will result in the disqualification of the entrant.
  3. The teacher may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the competition.
  4. The teacher must inform students and parents of their obligation to abide by the printed rules of the competition.
    • a. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the audition.
      b. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions or any OMTA Board Member.
      c. Audio and video taping violates copy-right laws and is not permitted.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

  1. Entrants must be a full-time student in school grades 5 or 6 at the time of the competition.
  2. Students must have studied with the same teacher a minimum of 6 months of the 9 months proceeding the first day of the month of the competition. An exception will be permitted if:
    • a. The student and/or teacher move out of the area.
      b. The teacher takes a sabbatical leave.
      c. The teacher is incapacitated.
      d. The previous teacher was not an OMTA member.
  3. Under exceptional circumstances and 4 weeks prior to the entry deadline, a letter from the previous OMTA teacher explaining and approving the change in teachers must be sent to the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions. The decision will be sent by e-mail to the current teacher to attach to the entry from.
  4. The granting of an exception will not be permitted if the parent and/or student initiate the change in teachers.
  5. Student studying in a multi-teacher school or studio must be entered under the name of the primary teacher.

ENTERY FEES AND ENTRY DEADLINE

  1. The entry fee is $15.00 for each performance category entered. The teacher MUST send all entry forms legibly and completely filled out, along with ONE CHECK payable to OMTA to the competition.
  2. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  3. Entries postmarked after the postmark deadline will not be accepted.
  4. Only exact reproductions of the Competition Entry Form printed in the OMTA Membership Handbook will be accepted.
  5. Entries received on incomplete entry forms and/or entries received without the correct entry fee will not be accepted.
  6. The fee for a check returned marked insufficient funds is $15.00. An entrant will not be permitted to perform in the competition until the entry fee and the returned check charge fee is paid by money order to the OMTA State Treasurer.
  7. Entries will not be accepted by telephone or e-mail.

PERFORMANCE TIME

  1. The entrant is allowed a brief warm-up (one minute maximum) in the competition room before performing for the adjudicator.
  2. Maximum performance time is 10 minutes.
  3. Minimum performance time is 5 minutes.
  4. The entrant will not be disqualified if more than 10 minutes of repertoire is submitted. Only the maximum performance time will be adjudicated

PIANO REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

  1. Only solo (no concerto) repertoire accepted.
  2. The following repertoire WILL NOT be accepted:
    • a. Simplified arrangements of original solo repertoire.
      b. Arrangements, transcriptions and/or adaptations of original solo repertoire.
      c. Popular music, hymns, folk songs, orchestral reductions, concertos written for any instruments, and vocal arrangements.
  3. See requirements applicable for both piano and instrumental repertoire.

INSTRUMENTAL REPERTOIRE REQUIRMENTS

  1. Repertoire must include two works from at least two of the three classifications:
    • a. Baroque or Classical (including Beethoven)
      b. Contemporary or Impressionistic.
  2. Instrumental repertoire may include concerti.
  3. Repertoire written with an accompaniment must be performed with a professional accompanist. The teacher may accompany their students.
  4. Computer generated types and CD accompaniments are not permitted.
  5. See requirements applicable to both piano and instrumental repertoire.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE FOR PIANO AND INSTRUMENTAL

  1. All repertoire must be memorized.
  2. Each piece must be performed completely, and may not be cut except for dot repeats or first endings.
  3. Multi-movements from a multi-movement work will be accepted as on composition.
  4. More than two compositions may be submitted to satisfy time requirements.
  5. To define style, consult the MTNA Repertoire List, The New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, or The Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature by Jane Magrath.
  6. A Student may not enter a composition performed on a previous OMTA conference program.
  7. Repertoire changes will not be accepted after one (1) week past the entry deadline.

REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC

  1. Reproduction of music, including transpositions by hand or machine may not be used by accompanists and may not be provided for the adjudicator(s).
  2. The only exception to this rule is for music which is out of print or still in manuscript (not published). Then the teacher must:
    • a. Provide the student with a letter of permission from the publisher or copyright holder to copy the music.
      b. The letter of permission must be presented at the competition.
  3. Reproduction of single pages may be used by the accompanist to facilitate page turns. The published score must be on the music rack.
  4. Computer generated music scores must have proof of purchase.

EXAMINATION OF MUSIC

  1. A monitor may examine all music prior to the performance of each entrant and the entrant's accompanist.
  2. Reproduction music without a letter of permission from the publisher and/or copyright holder will be removed and may not be used by the accompanist, or provided for the adjudicator(s). The entrant will not be permitted to perform the music in violation of this rule.
  3. Reproduced pages to facilitate page turns must be clipped to the original page in the score.
  4. Entrants must provide an original score for the adjudicator(s). Entrants without an original score from the adjudicator will be permitted, provided all other competition requirements have been met, to perform for critique only and will not be considered as a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
  5. Identifying names must be removed from the music.
  6. Measure numbers not printed in the music must appear in each measure or at the beginning of each line.

PERFORMANCE WINNERS

  1. Winners in each category will appear in recital during the OMTA State Conference June 1-2, 2012 at Oklahoma City University.
  2. Teachers must advise students and parents/guardians of their responsibility if selected as a winner or alternate.
  3. Winners' Recital performers will receive a monetary award after their performance.

COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS

  1. The competition performance is open to the public
  2. All competition participants will receive a Certificate of Merit. The certificate, critique sheet and music must be picked up by the student, the teacher, or another designated person. The materials cannot be mailed at a later date.

ADJUDICATORS

The decision of the adjudicator(s) is final. The quality of the performance will determine the selection of the winner rather than the length or difficulty of the composition. The adjudicator(s) have prerogative not to declare a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
