2011 OMTA SENIOR COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS

The purpose of the Senior Competition is to give students the opportunity to perform in a competitive event that will allow those students who exhibit a sufficient level of performance skill to be selected as Finalists and advance to the Senior Competition Finals in April. 

TEACHER ELIGIBILITY

  1. OMTA teachers may enter students only in the performance area for which full or provisional certification is held.
  2. OMTA teachers whose full or provisional certification has expired, and recertification has not been completed by the entry deadline of the competition must pay a $200.00 (payable to OMTA) participation fee. The fee must accompany the entry form.
  3. OMTA/MTNA certification expiration date is required on each entry form
  4. An email address for the teacher is required on each entry form.
  5. OMTA teachers paying dues by June 30 are eligible to enter students.
  6. Teachers paying dues after June 30, but before the entry deadline, may enter students by paying $25.00 (payable to OMTA) late fee for the year.
  7. A first time OMTA/MTNA teacher must pay state and national dues by the entry deadline of the Junior Competition.
  8. Associate members are not eligible to enter students in any OMTA Competition.

TEACHER RESPONSIBILITY 

  1. It is the responsibility of each OMTA teacher to abide by the printed rules of the competition
  2. Failure to abide by the printed rules will result in the disqualification of the entrant.
  3. The teacher may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the competition.
  4. The teacher must inform students and parents of their obligation to abide by the printed rules of the competition.
    • a. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the adjudicator before, during or after the audition.
      b. The parent and/or student may not have contact with the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions or any OMTA Board Member.
      c. Audio and video taping violates copy-right laws and is not permitted. 

COMPETITION CENTERS

Students may enter in either the North or South competition center, as long as they remain in their correct West District or East District Center.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

  1. Students must be in school grades 9-12 at the time of the competition.
  2. Students may enter in piano, voice, and orchestral instruments.
  3. Students must have studied with the same teacher a minimum of 6 months of the 9 months proceeding the first day of the month of the competition. An exception will be permitted if:
    • a. The student and/or teacher move out of the area.
      b. The teacher takes a sabbatical leave.
      c. The teacher is incapacitated.
      d. The previous teacher was not an OMTA member.
  4. Under exceptional circumstances and 4 weeks prior to the entry deadline, a letter from the previous OMTA teacher explaining and approving the change in teachers must be sent to the Vice-President for Competitions and Auditions. The decision will be sent by e-mail to the current teacher to attach to the entry from.
  5. The granting of an exception will not be permitted if the parent and/or student initiate the change in teachers.
  6. Student studying in a multi-teacher school or studio must be entered under the name of the primary teacher.
  7. A student may enter for critique only.

ENTERY FEES AND ENTRY DEADLINE

  1. The entry fee is $15.00 for each performance category entered. The teacher MUST send all entry forms legibly and completely filled out, along with ONE CHECK payable to OMTA to the competition.
  2. There is not an additional fee for students participating in Senior Competition Finals.
  3. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  4. Entries postmarked after the postmark deadline will not be accepted.
  5. Only exact reproductions of the Competition Entry Form printed in the OMTA Membership Handbook will be accepted.
  6. Entries received on incomplete entry forms and/or entries received without the correct entry fee will not be accepted.
  7. The fee for a check returned marked insufficient funds is $15.00. An entrant will not be permitted to perform in the competition until the entry fee and the returned check charge fee is paid by money order to the OMTA State Treasurer.
  8. Entries will not be accepted by telephone or e-mail.

PERFORMANCE TIME

  1. Maximum performance time is 15 minutes.
  2. The entrant is allowed a brief warm-up (one minute maximum) in the competition room before performing for the adjudicator(s).

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

  1. All entrants are required to perform
    • a. one piece from the Baroque or Classical period, and
      b. one piece from either Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary.
  2. Piano and voice must submit 2 memorized solos.
  3. Instrumentalist must submit 2 solos.
    • a. one solo must be memorized, and
      b. Memorization is optional on second solo.
  4. Repertoire written with accompaniment must be performed with a professional accompanist. The teacher may accompany their students.
  5. Computer generated tapes and CD accompaniments are not permitted.
  6. To define style, consult the MTNA Repertoire List, The New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, or The Pianist's Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance Literature by Jane Magrath.
  7. Multi-movements from a multi-movement work will be accepted as one composition. All variations must be performed in a theme and variation work.
  8. Compositions may not be cut except for dot repeats. First endings may be cut following a D.S. or D.C. repeat.
  9. Both pieces must be performed at the District Senior Competition. Entrants selected as finalists will perform both pieces at the State Senior Finals Competition to be held at McFarlin United Methodist Church in Norman on April 21, 2012.
  10. A Student may not enter a composition performed on a previous OMTA conference program.
  11. Repertoire changes will not be accepted after one (1) week past the entry deadline.

REPRODUCTION OF MUSIC

  1. Reproduction of music, including transpositions by hand or machine may not be used by accompanists and may not be provided for the adjudicator(s).
  2. The only exception to this rule is for music which is out of print or still in manuscript (not published). Then the teacher must:
    • a. Provide the student with a letter of permission from the publisher or copyright holder to copy the music.
      b. The letter of permission must be presented at the competition.
  3. Reproduction of single pages may be used by the accompanist to facilitate page turns. The published score must be on the music rack.
  4. Computer generated music scores must have proof of purchase.

EXAMINATION OF MUSIC

  1. A monitor may examine all music prior to the performance of each entrant and the entrant's accompanist.
  2. Reproduction music without a letter of permission from the publisher and/or copyright holder will be removed and may not be used by the accompanist, or provided for the adjudicator(s). The entrant will not be permitted to perform the music in violation of this rule.
  3. Reproduced pages to facilitate page turns must be clipped to the original page in the score.
  4. Entrants must provide an original score for the adjudicator(s). Entrants without an original score from the adjudicator will be permitted, provided all other competition requirements have been met, to perform for critique only and will not be considered as a winner, alternate, or honorable mention.
  5. Identifying names must be removed from the music.
  6. Measure numbers not printed in the music must appear in each measure or at the beginning of each line.

PERFORMANCE FINALISTS

  1. Senior Competition finalists will be selected to compete in a Finalist Competition at McFarlin United Methodist Church, 419 South University Blvd., Norman on April 21, 2012.
  2. There is not an additional fee for the Finalists Competition.
  3. Teachers are responsible for informing the parents and/or guardians of the students selected as finalist of their responsibility to perform at the State Finals Competition.
  4. A finalist who fails to appear in the State Finals Competition will not be permitted to enter the Senior Competition in the same performance category the following year.
  5. Each finalist will perform both pieces.
  6. In the Piano finals for grades 9-12, a winner will be selected from each grade. Adjudicators may also select, if the quality of performance is deserving, no more than four additional winners from any of the grades 9-12.
  7. In Voice, Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Harp, and Percussion the adjudicator may select a first and second place.
  8. First place winners in each category are required to perform on of their two pieces on a Winners' Recital at the OMTA State Conference on June 1-2, 2012 at Oklahoma City. A winner who fails to perform at the State Conference will not be permitted to enter the Senior competition in the same performance category the following year.
  9. Following the Winners' Recital, each winner who performs will receive a monetary award.

COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS

  1. All competition participants will receive a Certificate of Merit.
  2. Finalists will receive a Finalist Certificate, and will receive a trophy at the Finals.
  3. The certificate, critique sheets, trophy, and music must be picked up by the student, the teacher, or another designated person. The materials cannot be mailed at a later date.
  4. The Senior Competition and the Senior Finalists Competition are open to the public.
  5. Audio and video taping violates copyright laws and is not permitted at either Senior Competition or the Senior Competition Finals.

ADJUDICATORS

  1. There will be one adjudicator to hear and select finalists
  2. The quality of the performance will determine the selection of the finalist, rather than the length or difficulty of the compositions.
  3. The decision of the adjudicator is final and may not be questioned by the student, parent/guardian, or the teachers
  4. A student may be selected for honorable mention, if in the opinion of the adjudicator such selection is warranted
  5. There will be two adjudicators for the piano finals.
  6. There will be only one adjudicator in Voice, Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Harp, and Percussion.
  7. All entries will be adjudicated
